Brimley’s Bell Steps Down after 16 Years

BRIMLEY – After 16 years at the helm of the Brimley girls basketball program, coach Ray Bell announced this week that he is stepping down.

Bell, a 27-year coaching veteran of varsity basketball, departs as Brimley’s winningest coach, having led the Bays to 185 victories, three Eastern U.P. Conference championships, three district titles and one regional championship.

Bell considers starting a Rivals vs. Cancer game to be one of his greatest accomplishments.

“Walking into that first pink game, with the whole Soo High gym, it’s just all pink with the shirts that we designed,” Bell said. “Coming up with a Rivals vs. Cancer that gave back to the community. I mean, ultimately, basketball is just a game. I really enjoyed that.”

Brimley went 4-16 in Bell’s final season.
