Coleman Falls to Centreville in D4 Title Game

EAST LANSING – A historic season for the second-ranked Coleman softball program came to an end Saturday in the MHSAA Division 4 state final.

Facing Centreville with a state title on the line, the Comets dropped a 5-2 contest.

Winners of the 2005 Division 4 championship, Coleman was appearing in its second state final and first under coach Chad Klopf.

Trailing 1-0 through 2 1/2 innings, Centreville tied the game in the bottom of the third and then capitalized on an error at second base, scoring three runs on the play to take a 4-1 lead to the fourth.

Coleman would get a run back in the fifth on an RBI groudout from Mackenzie Miller, with Centreville adding an insurance run in the sixth.

The title is the first for Centreville (36-6) as the Bulldogs were playing in their first title game Saturday.

Faith Barden allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out six and walking three over six innings in the loss.

Brianna Townsend went 2-for-3 with an RBI double to lead Coleman at the plate.

Barden and Autumn Tubbs concluded their prep careers Saturday as Coleman graduates just two and is set to return 11.

The Comets end their year at 30-10.
