Pistons Hire Casey as Next Head Coach

The Detroit Pistons and former Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey have agreed to a five-year deal for Casey to become the organization’s next head coach.

The 2018 National Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Casey replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was released from his duties as Detroit’s coach and president of basketball operations in May after four seasons and one playoff appearance.

Casey coached the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2005-2007 before joining the Raptors for the 2011-12 season. In seven years with the Raptors, Casey led Toronto to four Atlantic Division titles, five playoff appearances and the Eastern Conference finals in 2015-16. Casey was fired on May 11 after Toronto was swept by Cleveland in the conference semifinals.
