By the Numbers 2018: Week 5 in Review

From great individual performances by Posen’s Mark Wisniewski and David Burley of Big Rapids Crossroads to Lake City ending a lengthy road losing streak in Beal City, Week 5 of the high school football season in northern Michigan saw a number of great stories play out.

4 – Total touchdowns by Traverse City Central’s Sam Schmitt in a 28-0 Big North Conference win over Gaylord last Friday. Schmitt had rushing touchdowns of 4 and 20 yards and scores through the air of 23 and 55 yards.

Top-ranked Pickford held Rudyard’s offense to just 62 yards in a 58-0 win last Friday.

6 – Area 11-player football teams that can reach the playoffs with a win this week. Reed City, Lake City, Manistee, Harbor Springs, Traverse City St. Francis and Mt. Pleasant are all on the cusp of making the postseason.
11 – Winless area programs. Central Montcalm, White Cloud, Beal City, Vestaburg, Mio, Inland Lakes, Kalkaska, Shepherd, Mason County Central, Shelby and Baldwin are all still in search of their first win.

62 – Total yards of offense allowed by Pickford in its 58-0 win over Rudyard last Friday. The Panthers improved to 5-0 in the process.
142 – Receiving yards by David Burley of Big Rapids Crossroads in a 38-28 loss to conference foe Bear Lake on Saturday.
245 – Yards rushing from Posen’s Mark Wisniewski on 17 carries and three touchdowns in a 54-32 win over Hale last Friday.
1986 – The last time Lake City beat Beal City on the road. The Trojans rolled to a 49-6 triumph last Friday to remain undefeated at 5-0.
