Red Wings Kick Off Training Camp With Annual Golf Outing

TRAVERSE CITY – The Detroit Red Wings have returned to northern Michigan.

The whole team made their way to Traverse City today for the beginning of training camp.

“It marks the start of the season and you know it’s always awesome to come up here and especially play in this event today and to give back to Centre Ice here and you know the fans who come out here and support us, it’s awesome,” said goalie, Jimmy Howard.

Players, coaches, and fans got the chance to hit the links before the real work starts.

“Coming Traverse gives us such a chance to hit so many fans throughout the state not just in the Metro Detroit area and it’s always a fun experience,” said head coach, Jeff Blashill.

It’s a day for the players to relax and get to work on their golf game.

“My golf game hasn’t been great this summer, I’ve been struggling, I don’t know what it is,” said┬áJustin Abdelkader, with a laugh.

The Wings are much more confident in their prospects than their golf game.

“Zadina was in Detroit a few times, looking forward to watching him more. Rassmussen, I saw a few times, looking forward to watching him. The list goes on and on. I think we have a lot of talented young players but just looking forward to watching those guys go out and compete,” said Abdelkader.

“I heard the young guys can really skate, and move so I’m really looking forward to how fast training camp is,” added Howard.

The prospects not the only thing on the teams mind as they enter training camp with rumors out of Hockeytown that Henrik Zetterberg may not be returning this year and Steve Yzerman may be coming back to the franchise.

“I think everyone was surprised, you know they’ve got a great team down there that he’s put together so I think everyone’s surprised by it,” said Howard about the possible return of Yzerman.

“I know he’s going to be coming up to camp for the physicals and what not but I saw him in Detroi

t a few times but obviously everyone’s hopeful but we’re ruling him out for camp and the start of the season,” Abdelkader said about Zetterberg.

With or without the captain, the Red Wings are ready to get to work.

“It’s also great getting to training camp, one we want to get working, I get about to August and I get itching to get working,” said Coach Blashill.

The Wings begin training camp Friday at Centre Ice Arena.
