Throwback Thursday: Morley Stanwood Wins 1st State Title Since 2007

MISportsNow’s Throwback Thursday is looking back at northern Michigan’s greatest games, from buzzer beaters to state finals. This marks the 10th in the biweekly series.

BATTLE CREEK – Alexis Huntey tallied 30 kills, 17 digs and six total blocks as Morley Stanwood captured its second MHSAA Class C volleyball state championship and first since 2007 with a 3-2 win over Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.

Morley Stanwood posted its second five-set win since the quarterfinals with a 25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 24-26, 15-12 win over St. Mary.

Alexis Huntey led the Mohawk (58-4-2) attack with a match-high 30 kills to go along with 17 digs and six total blocks.

“I couldn’t ask for a better team. I love every single one of those girls,” Huntey said. “If it weren’t for them, in practices, in tournaments, and pushing each other constantly, there’s no way we could have done this.”

Huntey, who finished second in the 2011 Miss Volleyball race, ranks sixth all-time in state history for kills in a season (930) and seventh in career kills (2,680).

Bailey Cairnduff tallied 18 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs in the championship match, while Kayla Rosman had eight kills, 12 digs and five blocks.

The Mohawks recorded postseason wins over Hart (3-0), White Cloud (3-0), Shelby (3-2), Beal City (3-0), North Muskegon (3-0) and Saginaw Valley Lutheran (3-2) before knocking off Charlevoix in straight sets in the semifinals.

“I wanted to cry. I did cry,” Morley Stanwood coach Robin Kozuch said. “I think the last two points, my sister was sitting on the bench next to me and we were holding hand and we’re like okay, let’s pray. These girls just stepped up and I’m so proud of everything, and it’s great to be from Morley Stanwood today.”
