Gladwin Tops Ogemaw Heights on PKs for NMSL Title
WEST BRANCH – It took overtime and a shootout but Gladwin captured its fourth straight Northern Michigan Soccer League championship with a victory over Ogemaw Heights on a rainy Wednesday.
With the game knotted at 2-2 after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the Flying G’s won 5-4 on penalty kicks.
“The guys have grit, you know, they don’t quit,” Gladwin coach Jerome Smalley said. “It’s a phenomenal, just a phenomenal year. I think we’ve really improved a lot. So, it’s fun. This is very satisfying.”
The Falcons held a 1-0 lead at the half on a Nick Marentette goal and led 2-0 midway through the second half on another Marentette goal before Gladwin goals from Justin Raymond and Matthew Stegeman.
Both teams open up district play next week.
