Saffell Propels Leland to State Semifinals

CADILLAC – Nick Saffell’s goal in the fifth round of a shootout lifted second-ranked Leland to a 1-0 win over top-ranked Muskegon Western Michigan Christian and a Division 4 regional championship on Thursday.

Leland won 3-2 in the shootout.

Goalkeeper Gavin Miller kept Western Michigan Christian off the scoreboard through regulation and overtime while Andy Mosqueda stopped a pair of shots in the shootout.

With the win, the Comets secure their first state semifinal appearance since falling to Grand Rapids Covenant Christian in a 2012 semifinal.

Leland (22-1-3) will face third-ranked Kalamazoo Hackett (17-6-1) Wednesday at Holland. Hackett shutout Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian 2-0 on Thursday and is the defending Division 4 state runner-up.

Wednesday’s game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
