St. Francis Eyes Third Straight Trip to State Finals
TRAVERSE CITY – With start of the girls golf state tournament less than a week away, Traverse City St. Francis is aiming to make its third straight trip to the MHSAA Division 4 state finals.
Ranked eighth in the latest Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association Division 4 state poll, the Gladiators were one of three Traverse City schools to reach the state finals a year ago, joining Division 1 state champion Traverse City West and Division 2 state finalist Traverse City Central. It marked the first time that all three schools had qualified for the state finals in the same year.
After finishing tied for 17th in 2016 and 12th in the state last fall, the Gladiators are looking to maintain the progress they’ve made this season.
“We’ve been hovering around the 400 mark as a team, so I would look to be around there,” St. Francis coach Craig Ardery said. “I think that would be good enough to go, and we can do that. We certainly have the talent. They have worked on their golf swings for several years now, and I think we’re ready to make that trip back.”
The Lower Peninsula girls golf postseason begins next Wednesday with regionals. St. Francis will compete in a 10-team regional hosted by Grayling at the Grayling Country Club on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
