TC West Preps to Defend State Championship

TRAVERSE CITY – With the girls golf postseason right around the corner, Traverse City West is preparing to defend its Division 1 state championship.

Led by two-time defending individual state champion Anika Dy and younger sister Anci Dy, the Titans, who have won two of the last three team state titles, are ranked 10th in the latest Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association Division 1 state poll and are fresh off winning the Big North Conference championship and Traverse City Central Invitational on Monday.

“We started out the year with a lot of different kids playing a lot of different positions, so as far as numbers, they weren’t even considering us,” West coach Karl Gagnon said. “In the last couple weeks, we’ve kind of solidified our top six kids, and they’re playing well, and all of a sudden we’re ranked now. I really think we’re going to be just fine.”

West will compete in a Division 1 regional hosted by Jenison at The Meadows at Grand Valley State next Thursday. The regional features eighth-ranked Caledonia.
