No. 13 Ferris State Blanks McKendree in NCAA Tourney Opener
BIG RAPIDS – The No. 13 Ferris State women’s soccer team opened its stay in the NCAA Division II tournament with a 2-0 win over McKendree on Thursday.
Making its first-ever postseason appearance, Ferris State (15-3-3), the third seed in the Midwest Regional, held a 1-0 lead at the half on Pia Nagel’s goal in the eighth minute. The tally was Nagel’s ninth of the season.
Tia VanSuilichem put the game on ice in the 62nd minute with her third goal of the year.
Alison Chesterfield recorded five saves in net for the shutout win.
Ferris State will now host two-seed Ohio Valley University (18-2-3) in a second-round game Saturday at noon. Ohio Valley handed Ashland a 1-0 loss in Thursday’s earlier first-round game in Big Rapids.
