Coaches’ Profile: Sacred Heart’s Mark Zitzelsberger

Mt. PLEASANT – After 21 years of coaching, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart cross country coach Mark Zitzelsberger is stepping away from his his position.

Since 1998 when he brought the program back, he has much success, winning six state titles, three state runner-up showings, 16 regional championships and 22 conference titles. The most notable success has been winning four straight MHSAA Division 4 championships with the girls team.

Becoming a coach came from wanting to help his children, which made the job extremely special for him.

“It was exciting, I mean I was pretty fortunate over my career to coach all three of my kids and find out what makes them tick and what not, and my wife thought I was going to be retiring after our youngest graduated, but that was over 13 years ago so I really fell in love with coaching,” said Zitzelsberger.

But now family is the reason he is stepping away, so he can spend more time with this grandchildren.

Zitzelsberger plans to still be around the team and be a ‘super-fan’ to the team.

A new cross country coach has not yet been named.
