Year in Review: Fall 2018

The 2018 fall season in northern Michigan saw the Leland boys soccer team capture its first state championship.

The Comets recorded a 24-1-3 season, capped off with a 1-0 win over defending state champion Ann Arbor Greenhills in the Division 4 final.

On the volleyball court, Leland and Traverse City St. Francis appeared in the Division 4 and Division 3 state semifinals, respectively. The Comets swept Carney-Nadeau to advance to their first state title match since winning the 2017 Class D championship. Leland’s quest for its sixth state title came up short against Mendon.

St. Francis was appearing in its first semifinal since 2015 after winning its third regional title in four years. The Gladiators would fall in four sets to eventual state runner-up Unionville-Sebewaing.

Ending the season on the gridiron, Pickford and Onekama made program history by reaching the 8-Player Division 1 and 2 state championship games.

Traverse City St. Francis and Lake City also returned to the Division 6 and 7 state semifinals, respectively, for a second year in a row. Both teams recorded undefeated regular seasons.
