Year in Review: Winter 2018

The 2018 winter season saw the Buckley boys basketball team secure its second consecutive MHSAA Class D state runner-up finish, while Northwest Conference rival Glen Lake reached the Class C final and a state title game for the first time since 1996.

On the girls side of the finals, Kingsley, Glen Lake and Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart all reached the state semifinals at Calvin College but would fall to Detroit Country Day, Ypsilanti Arbor Prep and Adrian Lenawee Christian, respectively.

On the ice the Traverse City West hockey team made its first state semifinal since 2010 when it faced Saginaw Heritage in a Division 2 semifinal. The Titans would fall in overtime, 3-2, and finish out their year at 17-10-3.

The wrestling state finals saw Gaylord make its first-ever appearance in a state title bout. The Blue Devils would fall to state powerhouse Lowell, 43-17, in the Division 2 final. In all four area teams would reach the quarterfinals, with Onaway, Pine River, Chippewa Hills and Gaylord all making it to the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. Pine River, Chippewa Hills and Gaylord would advance to the semifinals.

In February the Petoskey boys ski program won its eighth consecutive MHSAA Division 2 state championship, while Traverse City Central finished runner-up to Marquette in the Division 1 meet for the fifth straight year. On the girls side, Traverse City West took home a second-place finish in Division 1.
