Chippewa Hills Advances to D3 Semis; Shepherd Falls in Quarterfinals
KALAMAZOO – Chippewa Hills advanced to a MHSAA Division 3 state semifinal with a 35-24 win over five-seed Montrose Friday at Kalamazoo’s Wings Events Center.
Taylor Gibson (112), Bray Haynes (135) and Chayton Wiggins (189) all recorded pinfall wins for the Warriors, while Trenten Wiggins (152) posted a technical fall victory. Carl Whipple (215), Mason Hayes (145), Justin Bonner (140) and Daylin Wittig (119) all earned wins by decision.
“They wrestled really well today, real scrappy and getting after kids,” Chippewa Hills coach Kevin Edwards said. “Montrose is a tough team. Any time you get a 4-5 matchup, a 4-seed versus a 5-seed, you know you’re gonna be in for a brawl. So, they got after it today, and we weathered the storm and came out on top. Hard work works, is what we’ve talked about all year. Hard work works.”
Chippewa Hills (28-1) will now face top-seed Richmond (24-2) Saturday at noon. The winner of that semifinal will take on either Dundee or Whitehall or the state championship at 3:45 p.m.
Shepherd was also in action Friday, making its first appearance in a state quarterfinal since 2002. The eight-seed, the Bluejays fell 43-12 to Richmond.
Kevin Smith (285), Kye Andrews (112), Hunter Dysinger (135) and Trevor Robinson (145) all earned decision victories for Shepherd.
“My guys gave a great effort,” Shepherd coach B.J. Cline said. “I couldn’t really have asked any more out of them. They held up. They did what they needed to do. They hung in the matches. We had some real close matches that went their way. And we’re proud of those guys, they did a great job. They’ve been at it for a long time, and they’re fun to watch, and they need to be proud of that.”
