Gaylord Rolls Over Tecumseh to Punch Semifinal Bid

KALAMAZOO – The Gaylord wrestling program is headed back to the MHSAA Division 2 state semifinals after recording a 40-20 win over Tecumseh in a quarterfinal at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center on Friday.

Cody Starks (145), Dimitri Smith (152) and Jacob McKnight (160) earned pinfall wins for the Blue Devils while Cade Foster (189), Aurelius Krumholz (285), Gabe Thompson (103) and Bennett Sides (112) posted major decisions. Austin Kettlewell (215) and John Henry Sosa (130) recorded wins by decision.

“Gaylord kids battle. And we pushed the pace, and we got one ref that was calling stalling the way it was supposed to be called. So that was awesome,” Gaylord coach Jerry LaJoie said. “We came here to wrestle, and you know that’s what we’re going to do. You know, we’re not shying away from anybody. We don’t care how many state titles you’ve won.”

Gaylord will now face top-seed and five-time defending state champion Lowell in semifinal Saturday at noon. The contest is a rematch of last year’s state title match. Lowell handed Cedar Springs a 44-18 loss in another quarterfinal on Friday.

The winner of Saturday’s semifinal will take on either Goodrich or DeWitt for the state championship at 3:45 p.m.
