Graham Named Pit Spitters General Manager

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Pit Spitters announced Wednesday that Mickey Graham is the first general manager of the franchise.

Graham spent 19 years with the West Michigan Whitecaps, with the majority of his time as the Director of Marketing and Media. He will now oversee all aspects of the Pit Spitters franchise’s operation, with manager Josh Rebandt controlling the play on the field along with the majority of filling the team roster.

“As the general manager, I’m going to be in charge of everything off the field,” Graham said. “We’re actively looking for front office staff to fill those out. My job is to bring a new energy, new excitement into the ballpark. We’re going to be fun. That’s the one thing that we’re going to be stressing to everybody.”

Graham also mentioned that the franchise is working on renovations to the stadium’s concession stands and concourse area, with other stadium renovations in mind for the future. They will also change the stadium name from Wuerfel Park in the upcoming months.

“We are going to be changing the name of the stadium,” Graham said. “We are actively looking for a naming rights deal just because that helps. In this industry of business, when you have that type of sponsorship, it helps us do a lot more, potentially more renovations. But at some point in the next few months, the stadium name will change.”

“Mickey is the right person at the right time to lead this franchise.  I am confident that he has the experience to reinvigorate the market, creatively use that ballpark for outside events and to bring our organizational core values of providing fun and family-friendly entertainment to Traverse City and Northern Michigan,” Whitecaps and Pit Spitters CEO Joe Chamberlin said in the team’s press release.

“He has been a huge part of cementing the Whitecaps in the West Michigan community, which will translate well as we work to make Pit Spitters baseball a summertime staple in Northern Michigan for years to come.”

The Pit Spitters will play in their first Northwoods League game on May 28 against the Green Bay Booyah. The game will be at home at 7:05 p.m.
