Pine River, Onaway Fall in D4 Quarterfinals
KALAMAZOO – Onaway and Pine River saw their seasons come to an end at the MHSAA Division 4 state quarterfinals Friday at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center.
As the six-seed, Pine River fell to two-time defending state champion and three-seed Hudson (18-7), 53-16.
Brock Nelson (171) earned a 15-4 major win over Ethan Harris while fellow Pine River teammates Tim Rizor (189) and Bryan McCurry (285) both recorded pinfall victories.
“We knew we had a lot of work to do, coming in, we had worked on it all week, and they’re a tough team to beat,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “Maybe the score isn’t a result of the work that we put in, but that’s the way it is at this level, especially with the Tigers. This is familiar territory for them, and as we’re young, hopefully it’ll be familiar to us again next year.”
The Bucks were making their fifth straight quarterfinal appearance and end their winter at 25-10.
Seventh-seed Onaway dropped a 70-12 contest to second-seed Carson City-Crystal (40-2).
Matthew Grant (135) and Coty Ionetz (145) before posted pinfall wins for the Cardinals.
“This whole journey is about, you know, becoming good people, and responding to or reacting to adversity like this,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said. “We had a couple of kids that we thought would probably wrestle, probably score some points for us that just got caught in a bad spot, and you know they got pinned for it. But, it’s okay. I’m happy with my kids.”
Onaway finishes its season with a program-record 21 wins.
