TC Central’s Turner, Roe Named MHSAA Scholar Athlete
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has named three area student-athletes as recipients of its 2018-19 Scholar-Athlete Award program.
Traverse City Central’s Jade Turner and Edward Roe are two of 12 student-athletes from Class A schools to receive scholarships.
Presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, 32 individuals from Class A-D schools will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to 12 student-athletes from Class A, eight from Class B, six from Class C and four from Class D.
Turner has competed for Central’s swimming and diving and track and field teams for three seasons and is a member of the National Honor Society and Academic WorldQuest team. An AP Scholar with Distinction recipient, Turner will attend the University of Michigan and study business and history.
A four-year member of Central’s alpine ski and cross country programs and a three-year member of the cross country team, Roe is a National Merit Scholar semifinalist, Michigan Mathematics Prize finalist and a member of NHS. An Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, Roe will attend Cornell and study physics and mathematics.
To be eligible for the scholarship, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.50 and have previously won a varsity letter in at least one sport that has an MHSAA sponsored postseason tournament. Scholarship recipients will be announced in February, with winners being recognized during halftime of the Division 3 boys basketball final on March 16.
