Three Area Athletes Earn MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Awards
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has named three area student-athletes as recipients of its 2018-19 Scholar-Athlete Award program.
Clare’s Olivia Haring, Pierce Morrissey of Big Rapids and Newaygo’s Connor Swinehart are three of 20 student-athletes from Class A and B schools to receive scholarships.
Presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, 32 individuals from Class A-D schools will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to 12 student-athletes from Class A, eight from Class B, six from Class C and four from Class D.
A four-year member of Clare’s cross country and track and field programs and a year-year member of the girls basketball team, Haring earned all-conference, all-region and all-state honors in cross country and track and field while leading the Pioneers to seven Jack Pine Conference championships. Haring has served as a member of Clare’s student council and the Business Professionals of America.
Haring will attend Northwood and plans to study finance with the intention of earning a master’s in business administration.
Newaygo’s Swinehart has been a three-year member of the school’s varsity basketball, football and baseball teams, earning all-league honors five teams and all-state recognition in basketball. Swinehart has served as the student council president and is a member of the National Honor Society.
He plans to attend the University of Michigan and student biomedical engineering.
Morrissey is entering his fourth season this spring with the Big Rapids golf team after winning the MHSAA Division 3 individual state championship in 2018. He earned all-state honors in each of his first three years and is a member of the Mecosta County Youth Advisory Council and the MHSAA’s Student Advisory Council.
Morrissey will attend Michigan State and study business.
To be eligible for the scholarship, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.50 and have previously won a varsity letter in at least one sport that has an MHSAA sponsored postseason tournament. Scholarship recipients will be announced in February, with winners being recognized during halftime of the Division 3 boys basketball final on March 16.
