Wrestling State Finals Prep: Onaway Returns to Kalamazoo

This is the fifth in a series of five stories previewing the 2019 MHSAA team wrestling state finals.

ONAWAY – With its second consecutive Division 4 regional championship in hand, Onaway is headed back to the MHSAA state finals this week.

The seven-seed Cardinals will face second-seed Carson City-Crystal in a state quarterfinal Friday at noon at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center.

“I think it’s going to take a lot of pressure off of us being there last year,” Onaway junior Teddy Peters said. “It’s still an exciting experience. Not quite overwhelming, but it’s very much larger than most gyms you wrestle in. So it should be fun.”

Onaway’s postseason road included wins over Rogers City (66-7), Pellston (63-9), Iron Mountain (60-21) and Ishpeming Westwood (45-30).

Onaway’s first appearance in the state quarterfinals a year ago was a brief. As the eight-seed, the Cardinals fell to top-seed and eventual state champion Hudson, 75-3.

“We were hoping to get above an eight seed,” Onaway senior Coty Ionetz said. “That’s what we were going for all season long, trying to go for the tougher competition, showing people who we were all season long. And we got what we wanted.”

Carson City-Crystal is making its third straight quarterfinals appearance and has a pair of Division 4 state runner-up finishes to its credit in 2000 and 2001.

In addition to the team state finals, the Cardinals are sending five to the individual state finals that will take place March 1-2 at Detroit’s Ford Field.

Friday’s quarterfinal is set for noon. The winner will face either three-seed Hudson or six-seed Pine River in a semifinal Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
