Wrestling State Finals Prep: Shepherd Returns to Quarterfinals After 17-Year Absence

This is the third in a series of five stories previewing the 2019 MHSAA team wrestling state finals.

SHEPHERD – After a 17-year absence, Shepherd makes its return to the MHSAA Division 3 state quarterfinals this week.

As the eight-seed, the Bluejays will face state power and top-seed Richmond at 4:30 p.m. Friday Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center.

Shepherd recorded wins over Clare (64-16), Farwell (63-16), Gladwin (39-36) and Sanford Meridian (48-27) to get back to the quarterfinals.

“All of us have been wrestling since third grade, so we’re all pretty close,” Shepherd senior Trevor Robinson said. “We play Fortnite together all the time. We’re always having out. It’s a really good bond between all of us.”

Shepherd has reached the state highest level on four occasions, posting runner-up finishes in 2001 (Division 3), 1992 (Class C-D), 1975 (Class C) and 1973 (Class C-D).

Richmond has enjoyed a rich history of success at the state level, having won eight Division 3 state titles to go along with six runner-up finishes.

In addition to the team state finals, the Bluejays are sending four to the individual state finals that will take place March 1-2 at Detroit’s Ford Field.

Friday’s quarterfinal is set for 4:30 p.m. The winner will face either four-seed Chippewa Hills or five-seed Montrose in a semifinal Saturday at noon.
