MHSAA Announces Changes to Hockey Postseason
The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association has approved changes to its hockey postseason tournament.
At its annual winter meeting in Grand Rapids last week, the Representative Council approved a proposal that will change the hockey postseason tournament from two to three weeks, spreading out the maximum of six tournament games 13 days to 20 days.
The start of the regular season, state finals and total number of games allowed in a season are not impacted by the changes. The tournament will begin on the third Monday before the state finals instead of the current format of two weeks before. The changes take effect with the 2019-20 tournament.
In addition to those changes, the council also discussed a recommendation from the football committee that would change the strength-of-schedule formula that is used to determine the 11-player postseason, and reviewed results from a survey of varsity head coaches on the subject.
The council also heard updates on proposed seeding plans from basketball and soccer committees. Both seeding proposals and the football strength-of-schedule proposal will be voted at the Representative Council’s final meeting during May 5-6.
