The Wex Named Hockeyville USA Finalist

CADILLAC — The Wexford Civic Center in Cadillac received exciting news on Sunday, as they are one of four finalists in the Kraft Hockeyville USA competition.

The Wex earned a spot in the top four because of “their incredible stories and the rally support they received.” Cadillac and Calumet represent Michigan in the final four, with Eagle River, Wisc., and Sartell, Minn., also named finalists.

It’s now up to the community to vote for their rink to earn the Hockeyville grand prize of $150,000 in rink upgrades and the opportunity to host a preseason NHL game. First place receives $30,000 in rink upgrades and the two second place winners each receive $10,000 in rink upgrades.

“So we’re going to have a voting party here, probably going to have free open skate, and some other things going on,” said CAHA Treasurer, Ryan Schultz. “So we’re really pushing to have people come in here and we’ll have computers set up, and you can come in and skate and vote and skate and vote and go back and forth.”

The Wex needed $150,000 to replace its ice-making equipment, but the county’s liability insurance carrier said that they can cover the cost. If the Wex wins the grand prize, they would use the money to go toward more rink upgrades.

“We need a rink next year. And we need hockey,” said eighth grader at Cadillac Junior High, Jackson Halt. “And there’s a lot of people that play and you should see all the people that are here for open skate and stuff so without a rink it’d be pretty bad. And we have a bunch of stuff going on in the auditorium too so without that I don’t know where else we would do it.”

Voting begins on Saturday, March 30, at 7 a.m. and ends March 31 at 11 a.m. For more details on the competition, click here.
