Community Rallies Behind Rodts

MANCELONA — The northern Michigan community has rallied behind Danny Rodts, the former girls basketball coach at Elk Rapids and the first-year Athletic Director at North Central Academy in Mancelona.

Three weeks ago, Rodts had a heart attack, which was caused by a blood clot. The community support has been strong for the Rodts family, raising $36,917 on GoFundMe.

North Central Academy also has a pair of fundraisers on Thursday and Friday that will support Rodts as well.

On Thursday, the Outdoor Adventure Club will hold its annual auction, but funds will go to helping Rodts instead of its program this year. The auction starts at 5 p.m. at North Central Academy. There will be live and silent auctions held.

“It would mean a lot to have the support because it definitely is hard on the students, the staff and his wife. Everyone around here knew him,” NCA student Fern Hudson said. “He’s a very good teacher. He’s very outgoing.”

“He’s a really good gym teacher. He lets us like play and he lets us do fun games with him,” NCA student Cloey Huggins said.

On Friday, the school will hold a Relay for Rodts event from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at North Central Academy. There will be several athletic activities for people to participate in, including a relay, egg-and-spoon race and more.

“He’s fun with me. I hope that he can come out of the hospital soon,” said NCA student Bradley Willey.
