Player Profile: CMU’s O’Neil, Blanchard Achieve Success in MAC
MT. PLEASANT — A pair of northern Michigan student-athletes performed well at the Mid-American Conference Championships two weeks ago for Central Michigan.
Megan O’Neil, who attended Chippewa Hills High School, finished first in the 10,000-meter run. She qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter.
“People aren’t usually interested in the super long distance events, but the whole team was out there just hooting and hollering and it got to be a really exciting atmosphere,” O’Neil said.
Houghton Lake’s Jackson Blanchard also performed well, winning the 400-meter hurdles in the MAC Championship, also qualifying for the NCAA First Round.
“I’m very thankful for all my coaches and all my teammates and the support that they have had for me,” Blachard said. “It makes it a lot easier.”
They are two of 14 Chippewas that will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary. It’s in Jacksonville, Fla., from May 23-25.
