Belvedere Golf Club to Host U.S. Hickory Open
CHARLEVOIX – Every year the Belvedere Golf Club hosts its annual Hickory Open.
This year it’s a little different. It’s hosting the U.S. Hickory Open with more 120 golfers from around the country coming to play in the tournament.
“We normally have the Belvedere Hickory Tournament, but we were in sort of a queue to have the U.S. Hickory so when they said we could have, we started planning,” said Ross Hays, the chairman of the U.S. Hickory Open. “We’ve been planning for about three years, and now it’s here, and we’re excited to get going.”
The game will be no different than what we’ve seen in years past, however. The golfers will be using hickory golf clubs that were made anywhere from 1900 to 1935. They will also dress in the traditional pants, ties, caps and matching socks of golfers from that era.
There’s a lot of excitement around this event for a few reasons. It will be the first time Belvedere gets the chance to host the U.S. Hickory Open and they the tournament out in just two and a half days.
“Well it’s a feather in Belvedere’s cap, it’s an amazing, amazing golf venue, you know it’s not the easiest place in the world to get to, and a lot of people don’t know about Belvedere,” Hays said. :We’re just excited that the society decided that they wanted to let us have the event. And we’re excited to hold it.”
The club and its members are excited to show the rest of the world their ‘hidden gem’ and what golfing in northern Michigan is all about.
“It’s tremendous, it’s so phenomenal,” said long time Belvedere Golf Club member, Jim Gels. “It’s a small town up here in the middle of nowhere and having these great golfers from all over the country come here it’s just wonderful. It’s like I said to my wife the other day, boy I didn’t play very well and she said well is that important? And I said no but she said what’s important and I said trying to make all these people feel at home, up here and have a good time.”
The practice round begins Thursday, and the two rounds will be played on the Friday and Saturday.
