Big Rapids Native Returns to Calvin College Basketball Program as Women’s Head Coach

GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin College women’s basketball team has a new face in charge, but Mark Christner is not new to the school, nor is he new to the program.

He played men’s basketball at Calvin College in the 90s and now he is back with a new role.

The Big Rapids native is the new head coach of the women’s basketball team.

“I really believe that the game is the game. Albeit it is different, but I think here in this situation, the team and the program is hungry to get better,” said Christner.

Christner is not just returning to his alma mater, but he is also returning to the Knights.

He spent the first three years of his coaching career as an assistant of the women’s team from 2000-2002.

“I think our program is nationally known. Our league is nationally known. To be able to coach at your alma mater is a very special thing,” said Christner.

The Knights’ first game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 at Carthage.
