Boyne City Wins First Regional in Shootout
CLARE — The Boyne City girls soccer team won its first regional title on Thursday in a 5-4 shootout, defeating the No. 1 team in Division 3, Freeland. The Falcons’ two-year streak of making the state championship comes to an end.
The Ramblers trailed 3-2 entering halftime, notching the first two goals scored on Freeland during the postseason. They tied it up in the second half on a throw-in by Ally Herrick that eventually crossed the goal line after being misplayed, forcing overtime.
Following a scoreless overtime, Boyne City made five penalty kicks and Cora Hauger made the final save to deliver Boyne City its first regional title in program history.
The Ramblers advance to play in the Division 3 semifinal on Tuesday against the winner of Allegan and Grand Rapids South Christian. The game will be played at Cedar Springs at 6 p.m.
