Sacred Heart, Shepherd Girls Finish Third at State Finals

HUDSONVILLE – The Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart girls track and field team finished in third place at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 4 state finals on Saturday at Hudsonville.

The Irish finished with 56 points, as Fowler won the event with 71.

East Jordan was 10th (17), Frankfort 11th (16), Mason County Eastern and Montabella 17th (10), Buckley 22nd (nine), Forest Area 26th (seven), Glen Lake and Vestaburg 33rd (four), Pentwater 38th (three) and Gaylord St. Mary and Coleman in 42nd (two).

Frankfort’s Tara Townsend won the pole vault (11-04) while East Jordan’s won the shot put (40-04.25). Sacred Heart won the 3,200 (9:50.27) and 1,600 (4:06.34) relays while Scout Nelson took home top honors in the 800 (2:19.54) for the Irish.

On the boys side, Kalamazoo Hackett won with 64 points.

Frankfort was 12th (22), Ellsworth 15th (17), Whittemore-Prescott 21st (11), Johannesburg-Lewiston 22nd (10), Walkerville, Mason County Eastern and Beal City 29th (five), Onekama, Buckley and Sacred Heart in 38th (three), East Jordan and Rogers City 42nd (two), Marion 48th (one) and Big Rapids Crossroads 51st (0.25).

A the Division 3 girls state finals at Jenison, Shepherd finished in third with 35 points while Mason County Central was fourth with 31. Pewamo-Westphalia won the event with 45 points.

Hart and Kingsley tied for eighth with 26 points, while McBain was 18th (17), Boyne City 20th (13), Roscommon and Farwell in 22nd (10), Sanford Meridian in 28th (eight), Manton in sixth (six), Charlevoix and Central Montcalm in 33rd (five), Clare in 37th (4.25), Traverse City St. Francis in 45th (two), Beaverton in 47th (1.50), White Cloud, Reed City, Manistee and Grand Traverse Academy in 48th (one) and Lake City in 55th (0.25).

Shepherd’s Amber Gall won the 800 (2:12.50) and 1,600 (5:06.07). Shepherd also took top honors in the 3,200 relay (9:33.89) while Mason County Central’s Jael Wood won the pole vault (11-06).

On the boys side, Ithaca won the event with 45 points. Harbor Spring was fourth with 43.

Roscommon finished in eighth (20), Sanford Meridian 10th (17), McBain and Shepherd in 12th (14), Clare 16th (11), Reed City and Morley Stanwood 20th (10), Kingsley and Beaverton in 29th (eight), Charlevoix 42nd (four), Kalkaska 44th (three) and Elk Rapids, Pine River and Manistee in 48th (two).

At the Division 2 boys meet at Zeeland Stadium, Cadillac recorded a 22nd-place finish with 10.50 points while Zeeland West won with 53 points.

Big Rapids finished in 29th (eight), Petoskey 36th (six), Fremont 43rd (five), and Ogemaw Heights came home in 52nd with three points.

On the girls side of the Division 2 meet, Corunna won with 54 points. Cadillac was 37th (five points), Petoskey 38th (four), Benzie Central 42nd (3.50) and Fremont and Ludington in 43rd with three points.

At the Division 1 girls meet at East Kentwood, Traverse City Central finished 16th with 12 points as Oak Park won with 74.

On the boys side, Gaylord came home in 25th place with eight points while Traverse City Central finished 61st with one point. East Kentwood captured the state title with 63.50 points.
