Traverse City Native Placek Reflects On Time In Brazil

BIG RAPIDS – Traverse City native and former Ferris State volleyball player, Katie Placek got the chance of a lifetime to play on the USA Division II Volleyball Tour in Brazil.

“A couple days after graduation, got to go for 10 days in Brazil, and it was 20 Division II players, and we played four games and practiced once together and it was just a great time,” said Placek.

The tour was made up of two teams consisting of about 10 Division II volleyball players that travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil. It ran from May 13-22, and the teams play doubleheaders each night in cities they visited.

“It was the perfect balance between being a full-on tourist and then also playing volleyball. And it was great, we got to go to the Redeemer statue, and Sugar Loaf Mountain just things like that,” Placek said.

While she was there, they got to play some of Brazil’s best club and professional teams.

“There were some really really talented teams down there,” Placek said. “It was very fun, very high level play. At least one was a professional and we were just trying to keep up with her, it was great.”

Now that she graduated from Ferris State, she gets to continue her academic career and her time playing volleyball in another country as she’s heading to England.

“Just through Ferris and the NCAA I got the opportunity to get my master’s degree at the University of East London so I’m attempting to set there,” said Placek. “The girls here at Ferris have been very great in the spring season and helping me train for that, so we’ll be there for two years and it’ll be great.”

She’ll be getting her master’s in applied positive and coaching psychology.
