Charlevoix Native Hankins Signs with Czech National League Team

Charlevoix native and former Ferris State star center Zach Hankins will be continuing his professional basketball career overseas.

Hankins signed a two-year contract on Monday with Nymburk Basketball of the Czech National League and FIBA’s Basketball Champions League. The team has won 15 straight Czech National League titles and is a 12-time Czech Cup champion.

“It’s a very respected program in FIBA,” Hankins said. “I talked to the coach and he really likes my style and he really likes my personality. They’re a fast-paced team, so I’ll kinda just fit together.”

Hankins played with the Philadelphia 76ers summer league team in the 2019 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas this month. He led Ferris State to a 38-1 finish and their first NCAA Division II national championship in 2017-18 and was named the 2018 National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II National Player of the Year. Hankins completed his collegiate career as a graduate transfer with NCAA Division I Xavier University in 2018-19. Hankins adjusted well to Division I basketball, leading the Big East Conference and breaking the Xavier single-season record in field goal percentage.

Hankins says he hopes to earn another NBA Summer League spot next year.
