Hundreds of Players Compete in Sault Ste. Marie Gus Macker Tournament
SAULT STE. MARIE – A popular basketball tournament returned to Sault Ste. Marie over the weekend.
Hundreds of players worked their hardest on Saturday while fans cheered them on in the 7th Annual Gus Macker Tournament.
More than 100 teams gathered around the City Hall grounds to participate.
While most of the players are from the Eastern Upper Peninsula, one team came from as far as South Carolina.
What many people do not know is that dozens of volunteers make the three-day event successful, including Lake Superior State student athletes.
“We just like to enjoy the community and we like to help out. During the season, we help out the elderly. We just love to help out the community, so that is what we are doing today,” said Montrece Collins, a Lake Superior State Laker volunteer.
The event wraps up on Sunday with championship games.
The money raised will go to Superior Health Support System and the Sault Ste. Marie High School boys basketball program.
