Evart Looks to Start Strong in 2019

EVART – Evart opened its 2019 practice schedule with its traditional midnight practice early Monday morning.

The Wildcats are coming off consecutive losing campaigns after reaching the playoffs for the fourth time in program history in 2016. After going 4-5 in 2017, Evart took a step back last fall with a 2-7 mark that saw wins over Fremont and White Cloud.

“As soon as those first games got through, we were having our heads down and not thinking it’s going to finish good,” Evart senior Donavin Reagan said. “If we keep our heads up straight through that first game, we’ll probably be good.”

The Highland Conference will have a different look this season as Houghton Lake and Roscommon join after departing the Jack Pine Conference. That move means a seven-game league schedule.

“We talk about climbing the mountain,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “When you go out and you’re a mountain climber, nothing’s give and everything is earned. In order to climb the mountain of what is the Highland Conference, you got to take small steps to get big, giant gains.”

Evart opens its schedule at home against Frankfort on Friday, Aug. 30. The Wildcats close out their regular season at home with Harrison on Friday, Oct. 25.
