Experienced Glen Lake Preps to Defend NMFL Leaders Title
MAPLE CITY – As Glen Lake prepares to open its 2019 season, it does so with an experienced roster.
The Lakers graduated just five players from last year’s squad that went 5-5, won the Northern Michigan Football League Leaders title and reached the postseason for a fourth consecutive year.
Despite those achievements, the Lakers weren’t satisfied.
“Four of the seniors this year have two years of varsity experience underneath them,” Glen Lake coach Jerry Angers said. “We’ve got sophomores with varsity experience underneath them. I think that’s the big thing about that. They know what needs to be done. They’re not happy about last year, how it finished, nor how we did defensively or offensively in certain games. I think that’s going to be huge for us.”
“Because we didn’t have that many seniors, we had a lot of juniors step up and take their place,” added Glen Lake senior Jonathan Wright. “Now that they’re gone, we’re already there, so it’s not much of a huge step for us.”
Glen Lake faces a pair of perennial playoff contenders in the opening two weeks in Millington and Traverse City St. Francis. The Lakers open their season at home against Millington on Thursday, Aug. 29.
