Experienced Mancelona Excited for 2019

MANCELONA – After going winless in 2017, Mancelona rebounded to post a 4-5 campaign last fall.

The Ironmen won their final three games of 2018 and narrowly won their final four in a 10-6 loss to Frankfort in Week 6.

Mancelona will have 22 student-athletes on its varsity roster this fall including 11 seniors and seven juniors. The Ironmen also have 24 on their JV squad.

“They’ve worked really hard over the last three years,” Mancelona coach Dan Derrer said. “A lot of them played as sophomores on the varsity, so they haven’t got the opportunity to get into the playoffs. So I know that’s one of the goals. That stuff will all take care of itself if we continue to get better every day, we’ll have a shot at it.”

With a number of starters returning on defense, Mancelona is excited for 2019.

“We’ve worked a lot,” Mancelona senior Johnny Ancel said. “We’ve really kind of turned things around. We’ve worked really hard to get back on track. My sophomore year we didn’t win a game and we’re just trying to bring it back.”

Mancelona opens its season at Inland Lakes on Thursday, Aug. 29.
