Grand Traverse Academy Not Fielding Football In 2019

TRAVERSE CITY – Grand Traverse Academy will not field varsity, JV or middle school football programs this fall, the school’s athletic director Matt Gorman confirmed Wednesday.

Grand Traverse did not field a varsity program in 2018 but did support a JV team last fall. Gorman says there were discussions about fielding all three levels this year back in the spring, but there was not enough student interest. The school had discussed plans of competing again at the 8-player level.

The Mustangs previously competed as a co-op with Traverse City Christian prior to 2017. Grand Traverse’s best season came in its final year as a co-op with Traverse City Christian when it went 4-5 in 2016, winning its last three games.

Gorman says the school will maintain the equipment and assess interest of restarting the program on a year-to-year basis.
