Johannesburg-Lewiston Preps to Defend NMFL Legacy Title
JOHANNESBURG – After winning the Northern Michigan Football League Legacy division title in outright fashion a year ago, Johannesburg-Lewiston enters 2019 with similar expectations.
After dropping its Week 1 contest to Manton last fall, the Cardinals recorded eight consecutive wins to close out the regular season and posted a playoff win over Merrill before falling to eventual Division 8 state runner-up Breckenridge in a district final.
The Cardinals return four players on the offensive line to solidify its well-known rushing attack.
“Our goals are always the same every year. Make the playoffs. Win a conference championship. Win a state title,” Johannesburg-Lewiston coach Joe Smokevitch said. “Nothing’s changed this year. You know, last year, we made the playoffs, won a conference championship for the first time in 20 years, ran into Breckenridge who lost in the state finals. We had a great run. Looking to make a great run again.”
Johannesburg-Lewiston hosts Manton on Friday. The Rangers won last year’s meeting 29-22.
