Newaygo Eyes Deeper Postseason Run
NEWAYGO – After consecutive seven-win campaigns and playoff appearances, an athletic Newaygo squad begins 2019 having to replace its quarterback and much of its linebacker group.
The Lions, who have combined to go 14-7 over the last two seasons and lost to eventual Division 6 state runner-up Montague in a district final last year, return a majority of their linemen.
“They understand there is something to look forward to the end of it. But with that said, you’re only as good as your last one,” Newaygo Scott Van Essen said. “We’ve got to get better. How do you do that? You’ve got to start working a little bit harder. Not be satisfied. Understand what you’re goals are and try to get there.”
After recording their first playoff win since 2012 last year with a 25-10 victory over Morley Stanwood in a Division 6 pre-district contest, the Lions are looking for an extended run in the postseason this fall.
“That’s pretty much what we want to do. Go farther and farther,” Newaygo senior David Gonzalez said. “Playoffs back to back, that was great. Just want to go farther every year.”
Newaygo welcomes in Kent City to open its season on Friday, Aug. 30.
