Newberry Preps for Inaugural 8-Player Season

NEWBERRY – With second-year head coach Joe Austin leading the way, Newberry becomes the latest area program to join the 8-player ranks this fall.

The Indians graduated a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Brandon Christensen and Jaylen James, but return 16 upperclassmen.

Despite low participation numbers in recent years, the Newberry players were hoping to continue playing at the 11-player level.

“I was a little upset at first because it’s not 11-man anymore, but after adjusting to it, I kind of like it more,” Newberry senior Steve Brown said. “It’s more speed-based and with our team, we’re a faster team. So it’s more built for us.”

After four straight playoff appearances, the Indians took a step back last year, dropping their first three games en route to a 3-6 campaign.

“We were pretty disappointed with a 3-6 season last year. We anticipated a little bit better job,” Austin said. “The numbers were down. They had been down, so we knew we’d be in some issues. I think they’re excited.”

Newberry opens its season at home against Wolverine on Friday, Aug. 30.
