Pit Spitters Advance to Northwoods League Championship

TRAVERSE CITY — The Pit Spitters competed in their first Great Lakes Divisional Championship in the franchise’s inaugural season, coming up with a close 3-2 victory over Madison. They advance to the Northwoods League Championship.

Traverse City got off to a great start in the first inning, with Michael Slaten smacking in Hudson Byorick with a single to center field. The Pit Spitters added onto their lead in the next inning, with a 2-RBI base hit by Riley Bertram to boost them to a 3-0 lead.

The Mallards got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth, with their first run coming on a walk. Jordan Stephens then hit it to center field to drive in another run, but Jake Wilson stepped up with a huge play to throw out Justice Bigbie at home for the final out, keeping the Pit Spitters in front, 3-2.

“When he came up to bat, I was going through all these situations in my head like if the ball was hit to me, it’s going home. If it’s in the gap, to my cut man,” Wilson said. “And it just happened the ball was coming right to me and I knew right away where I was going, and I’m just lucky enough to have Proctor behind the plate to catch the ball and make a great tag on the runner.”

The Pit Spitters advance to face Eau Claire in the Northwoods League Championship at 7:05 p.m. on Friday in Traverse City.
