Sacred Heart Preps for Year 2 of 8-Player Football
MT. PLEASANT – The first season at the 8-player level proved to be a successful one for Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart.
Despite battling the injury bug, the Irish settled into the North Central Thumb League Red division nicely and extended their streak of .500 or better seasons to 15 straight and reached the playoffs for an 11th consecutive year with a 7-3 campaign.
“There are nuances, and scheme-wise, that are definitely adjustments,” Sacred Heart coach John Ruggles said. “As the season went on, and we figured those things out, I think we smoothed out some of those rougher edges as we went. And so we kind of come into this season a little more thinking 8-man thoughts.”
The Irish, who open their season with four consecutive non-conference opponents, must replace a large senior class that featured a number of all-state players.
“We’ve got some new guys coming out with less experience,” Sacred Heart senior Nate Gruss said. “As long as we keep working hard, we should be pretty solid all season.”
Sacred Heart opens its 2019 campaign at home against Kinde North Huron on Thursday, Aug. 29.
