Shankel Takes Over Reins at Reed City

REED CITY – With a 31-game conference win streak and eight straight league titles to its credit, Reed City begins a new era under first-year head coach Scott Shankel.

A longtime assistant at Reed City, Shankel takes over for veteran coach Monty Price who departed for Belding. The Coyotes also graduated a class that went 43-5, won three district titles and made the program’s first state semifinal appearance.

“Every year it’s been putting it on the seniors’ shoulders,” Shankel said. “You want to keep this dynasty going. We don’t want to break it up, so keep it rolling. Put the work in during the summer and during the season. Let’s keep it going.”

The Coyotes have won 61 of their last 62 Central State Activities Association games, with their last defeat coming in Week 3 of the 2014 season to Newaygo (14-6).

“You don’t ever want to be that one class that didn’t succeed with it,” Reed City senior Austin Whitehead said. “This year we worked twice as hard to make sure that we can keep it around.”

Reed City opens its season at defending Division 6 state runner-up Montague on Friday, Aug. 30.
