Shepherd Rallies Past Big Rapids in Second Half

BIG RAPIDS – Shepherd scored 28 unanswered points and opened its season with a 42-22 victory over Big Rapids at Ferris State’s Top Taggart Field Friday morning.

The Cardinals (0-1) held a 15-14 lead at the half in a game that was postponed Thursday night due to severe weather in the area and struck first in the third quarter on Sam Alley’s 47 yard touchdown run with 9:52 remaining to take a 22-14 lead.

The Bluejays and quarterback Kaiden Andrews answered with a pair of scoring strikes to take a 28-22 lead to the fourth.

Andrews connected on 12-of-22 passing for 193 yards and three touchdowns while Logan Buckner led the Shepherd ground game with 52 yards and a score.

Alley led all rushers with 132 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Big Rapids and was 9-of-15 through the air for 51 yards and an interception.

Shepherd opens its home schedule with Beaverton next Friday, while Big Rapids welcomes in Tri County.
