Young Clare Squad Opens its Season with Midnight Practice
CLARE – Clare officially kicked off its 2019 season early Monday morning with its traditional midnight practice.
Winners of 11 of the last 12 Jack Pine Conference championships, Clare will look very different from the team that registered consecutive 9-2 seasons and district final appearances.
The Pioneers must replace their entire offensive line and a bevy of key offensive playmakers including the dynamic wide receiver and cornerback duo Brenden Sersaw and Nick Roe.
“Guys that were behind the guys the last year, that didn’t get much playing time, well now it’s their time,” Clare coach Kelly Luplow said. “We tell them this all the time, your time’s coming. And well, now it’s here. Now let’s see what you can do.”
“We’re very young,” added Clare senior Colt Smedley. “A lot of guys fighting, everyone’s fighting for a spot because we don’t have very many.”
Clare’s conference docket will look also different this fall, as Houghton Lake and Roscommon departed for the Highland Conference while Shepherd and Pinconning make the move over from the Tri-Valley Conference Central and West divisions, respectively.
Clare opens its season at Alma on Thursday, Aug. 29.
