Congressman Bergman Meets with Onekama Football Program

ONEKAMA – United States congressman and retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant general Jack Bergman met with the Onekama High School football program Monday afternoon.

Bergman, who represents Michigan’s 1st congressional district, met with the Portagers prior to this Friday’s scheduled Warrior Game. Onekama’s opponent, Forest Area, announced Monday it is canceling its 2019 season, but Onekama coach John Neph is working to find a team to replace the Forest Area.

As for the significance behind the game, Bergman says he loves seeing schools host games like the Warrior Game where veterans and first responders are honored.

“If you’re a veteran and you’re looking down at that field, you see that camo and you see those young men on the football field going at it in the spirit of good competition, it values that service,” Bergman said. “We feel good about it. It’ll bring tears to eyes. It’ll bring claps. There will be shouts of joy. That’s what it’s about.”
