Onekama, Suttons Bay Set to Meet in Warrior Game
ONEKAMA – Just days ago the Onekama football program suddenly found itself without its traditional opponent for its annual Warrior Game.
With Forest Area Community Schools announcing on Monday that it was canceling the remainder of its 2019 season, Onekama was left without an opponent.
In stepped conference foe Suttons Bay, which was originally scheduled to receive a forfeit win over Grand Traverse Academy this week.
The two will now meet Friday at Onekama, with all proceeds from the game benefitting the Manistee County Veterans Trust. Admission for all veterans is free and veterans will be honored at halftime.
“I was a Marine myself,” Onekama assistant coach Justin Sedelmaier said. “Getting out for me, I wasn’t sure, being a veteran, being a coach, it was all kind of an emotional thing and heartfelt. All the players, coaches, everybody kind of felt the emotion of the game and the energy. I think it met and exceeded all expectations. So this year, it’s even more exciting. It’s something we’ve strived in every part to be able to make it the best it can be and do the most we can for our veterans.”
As for the teams themselves, Suttons Bay and Onekama have both gotten out to 3-0 starts, with the Portagers checking in at fifth in the latest Michigan Associated Press 8-player state poll. The two teams have combined to outscore opponents 237-32. Onekama leads the all-time series at 19-12 but dropped last year’s lone meeting 13-8.
The two sides will also meet again on Friday, Oct. 18 at Suttons Bay, with that contest counting towards the Midwest Central Michigan 8-player Football West Division standings.
Friday’s kickoff is at 7 p.m.
