Red Wings Kick off Training Camp with Annual Golf Classic

TRAVERSE CITY – The Detroit Red Wings officially kicked off their 2019 training camp and stay in Traverse City with the 21st annual Detroit Red Wings Training Camp Golf Classic at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa on Thursday.

Thursday’s event helped ease the Red Wings into the season and training camp.

“We’re able to reach so many Red Wing fans outside of the metro Detroit area and obviously some people come up from Detroit, but it’s some from the West side, some from the U.P. so it’s a really cool thing,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said.

“It’s always great coming up here to Traverse, seeing a lot of familiar faces, and just supporting this area,” added Red Wings left wing Justin Abdelkader. “There’s a ton of fans here.”

With Steve Yzerman returning to the organization as the executive vice president and general manager, there’s much anticipation for the upcoming season.

“Personally, I can’t wait to see what happens in the near future,” Red Wings right wing Anthony Mantha said. “Hopefully he can bring our team to the next level as well and that’s why we’re here. We want to be the next great team and hopefully we can build something great with him.”

Blashill announced Thursday that Detroit will once again go with four alternate captains for 2019-20 with Frans Nielsen, Luke Glendening, Justin Abdelkader and Dylan Larkin.

The Red Wings will host practices at Centre Ice Arena at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with the alumni/celebrity game taking place at 6 p.m. Saturday. The annual Red and White game is slated for noon on Sunday and the training camp wraps up with a practice session at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
