Red Wings Prospects Win NHL Prospect Tournament Championship

TRAVERSE CITY – The Detroit Red Wings prospects captured the 2019 NHL Prospects Tournament championship with a 6-5 win over the Dallas Stars at Traverse City’s Centre Ice Arena on Tuesday.

The Red Wings led 1-0 after the opening period but trailed 3-2 after two as both teams were seeking their second NHL Prospects Tournament championship.

“I think we’re going to enjoy this,” Red Wings prospect Givani Smith said. “We worked pretty hard to get here, so to let it go by is not fair to us. We’re going to enjoy it. Have the day off tomorrow and be ready for camp.”

Smith and Joe Veleno scored two goals apiece in the win while Gregor MacLeod and Ryan Kuffner each scored a goal. Veleno ended the tournament with seven goals in four games.

Earlier in the day the Columbus Blue Jackets skated to a 5-4 overtime win in the third-place game while the New York Rangers secured fifth place with a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues. The Chicago Blackhawks also finished in seventh place with a 6-1 win over the Minnesota Wild.
