TC West, Grand Haven Set to Meet for Coast Guard Cup

TRAVERSE CITY – The Titans of Traverse City West and the Buccaneers of Grand Haven have met 12 times overall.

They meet for a 13th time on Friday.

The two teams play for the Coast Guard Cup, a special game to honor those who serve with both Traverse City and Grand Haven being Coast Guard cities.

“It’s a cool thing especially in high school to have a couple traveling trophies or trophy games and this is another special one,” said head coach Greg Vaughan.

Both have won six games against the other, so Friday night is for the upper-hand.

“They’re a really tough opponent, a really good opponent that’s come along ways so last year’s team for them was different from this year’s and I think the same is said for ours, we’re missing a few key guys but we have other guys stepping up,” added Vaughan.

Last year, Grand Haven came away with a 13-10 win.

“Last year was was a tight game, we lost,” said senior Aidan Griggs. “This year we’re looking to win that Coast Guard Cup back, hopefully continue the rivalry. I know last year our offense struggled a little bit in the red zone. We’re hoping to fix that this year, get a couple new plays, stuff like that. Defense hopefully stays solid, and then, yeah, score some points and take the W.”

The game begins at 7  p.m. on Friday at Thirlby Field.
